Singer Sunitha Issues Clarification After Viral ‘My Body, My Choice’ Controversy

Popular playback singer Sunitha has responded to the controversy surrounding her recent remarks, issuing a clarification after facing widespread criticism on social media.

The singer came under fire after commenting that when women say, “My body, my choice,” men could similarly say, “His eyes, his choice.” The statement quickly went viral, with many social media users criticizing her and alleging that the comparison overlooked the core principles of women’s rights and consent.

Addressing the backlash through her Instagram Stories, Sunitha said her comments had been misunderstood and taken out of context. She emphasized that she never intended to justify or defend any form of inappropriate behaviour towards women.

“As a woman, I strongly believe in equal rights, equal opportunities, dignity and respect for women. I would never support or tolerate anything that harms or demeans another woman,” Sunitha wrote in her clarification.

Despite her explanation, the debate has continued online, with users expressing mixed reactions. While some accepted her clarification and felt her comments had been misinterpreted, others maintained that her original statement was insensitive and warranted criticism.

Sunitha is one of the most celebrated playback singers in Telugu cinema, with numerous hit songs to her name. In addition to her singing career, she is a familiar face on television, serving as a judge on several reality shows. Her son, Aakash Goparaju, has also entered the film industry as a lead actor.

Although Sunitha has now clarified her stance, the discussion surrounding her remarks continues to generate conversations across social media platforms.
