Actress Anasuya Bharadwaj has spoken candidly about the social pressures women often face after losing their husbands. Recalling the changes in her family following her father’s demise three years ago, the actress said she has been questioning certain traditions ever since.
Anasuya revealed that her mother loved dressing up with a bindi, kajal, colourful bangles and anklets. However, after her husband’s death, she stopped wearing them because of the expectations imposed by society.
The actress said she found it difficult to see her mother give up things that were part of her personal style and happiness simply because she became a widow.
Anasuya questioned why a woman’s choice to wear a bindi or bangles should change after her husband’s death. She also wondered why widows are subjected to restrictions during religious ceremonies and other auspicious occasions.
According to Anasuya, such practices need to be questioned rather than blindly followed. She stressed that wearing traditional adornments is ultimately a woman’s personal choice and should not be dictated by societal norms.
Her emotional reflections have brought attention to the larger conversation surrounding widowhood, tradition and the freedom of women to make their own choices.
